Malus
Description
Believed to have originated from Central Asia the apple tree is a deciduous tree that generally stands between 2 to 4.5 meters tall in farms and up to 9 meters tall when grown in the wild. The apple tree produces round edible fruit that is common in grocery stores around the world, the seeds of the apple are safe to consume in small quantities but have a large amygdalin content (a cyanide compound) for their size and should be consumed with caution.
Care/Ecology
While it's pretty easy to find most apple varieties in grocery stores, many of your favorites like Honeycrisp are not easy to grow due to their susceptibility to pests and diseases. Instead of picking one of your store favorites, growing an ornamental or less popular variety is the way to go. The best apples for at-home gardening are liberty, pixie crunch, and gold rush apples, all of these varieties are blight-resistant and resistant to many other diseases. The best time to plant apples in cooler climates is early spring, while in warmer climates, spring- late autumn is a suitable time to plant them. Apple trees require full sun and soil that has suitable drainage. Apple trees need to be pruned in the winter to encourage blooming and will produce fruit yearly.
