Ficus Carica

  • Description

    The fig plant, scientifically known as Ficus carica, is a captivating addition to our university gardens. Originating from the Mediterranean region, this deciduous tree belongs to the Moraceae family and is cherished for its delicious and nutritious fruits. Fig trees vary in height and are generally between 10 to 30 feet tall. Fig trees produce small, round, purple fruit yearly that has a soft sweet interior and edible exterior.

  • Care/Ecology

    Figs prefer well-drained soil and full sunlight. The ideal soil type for fogs to grow in is nutrient-rich loamy soil with few rocks and debris, the soil should ideally have a ph of 5.5 to 6.5. Fig trees should be watered daily and pruned 1-2 times a year before they bloom.
