About Us

Hansori at UCI was formed in 2002 by four former students, who were inspired by Kim Duk Soo's Samulnori performance at the Barclay Theater. Since then, Hansori has been striving to spread Korean cultural awareness at UC Irvine. The organization strives to preserve traditional Korean culture through the practice of traditional Korean drumming, known as Pungmul (풍물) and Samulnori (사물놀이). Hansori members learn and practice Korean percussion music that is performed by four traditional Korean instruments, representing four different weather components - thunder, rain, clouds, and wind. When played all together, they create “one sound”—the meaning of Hansori. We hold weekly practices throughout the school year and perform around Southern California, such as Koreatown, Los Angeles; Segerstrom Center for the Arts, Costa Mesa; and the Barclay Theater in Irvine.
