About Us
Hansori at UCI was formed in 2002 by four former students, who were inspired by Kim Duk Soo's Samulnori performance at the Barclay Theater. Since then, Hansori has been striving to spread Korean cultural awareness through the practice of traditional Korean drumming, known as Pungmul (풍물) and Samulnori (사물놀이). Hansori members learn and practice Korean percussion music that is performed by four traditional Korean instruments, representing four different weather components - thunder, rain, clouds, and wind. When played all together, they create “one sound”—the meaning of Hansori. Practices are held weekly throughout the school year to perform around Southern California with events including Lunar New Year celebrations, weddings, festivals, and many more.
