Guest Speaker Dr. Vandekerckhove - RECAP

"If you're not living on the edge, you're taking up to much space"

Thank you to those who joined us today for Dr. Vandekerckhove's presentation!

In case you missed it, here are some main takeaways:

  • Research the department/program you're applying to and make sure you're a good fit. If the research you want/skills you have aren't relevant to anything the department is doing, you won't get in! So make sure you look up different research in the program that you're interested in.
  • "Many grad programs don't care about the name of your degree, it's more about what you can do." Build up your technical skills in math, statistics, and programming. Relevant coursework, esperically concrete research experience and skill development is more important than degree titles.
  • Read papers and explore recent research topics to discover your interests. Take advantage of our current situation. Many conferences such as https://neuromatch.io/ can be found online for free.
  • Set goals for yourself to help build up your skills. Ex: If you're trying to build programming skills from scratch, you can look online for resources that can help you. Dr. Vandekerckhove recommends Danielle Navarro's Learning Statistics with R.

Up Next: How To - Virtual Study Groups!

Come join us next week on Tuesday (11/3) at 7:00pm to learn about virtual study groups! Many of us may be in the midst of studying for midterms, or perhaps even planning ahead for final exams, and with classes being virtual, it might be difficult to create an effective online study group. In next week's meeting, we'll be going over how to find/create a study group, how to structure a study group, and how to make effective use of your study group time! RVSP Today! We hope to see you there!
