The UCI Law Civil Rights Litigation Clinic & the Intellectual Property, Arts, & Technology Clinic will be hosting a screening for Ninety Minutes Later, a documentary film by Cyndy Fujikawa. The award-winning film chronicles the 2018 fatal police shooting of Latina actress Vanessa Marquez (Stand and Deliver, ER) who was killed in her home after a wellness check by South Pasadena police officers.
Ninety Minutes Later paints a portrait of Vanessa Marquez as a vivacious, talented, and trailblazing young, brown, aspiring actor, as well as one with an outspoken and frequently complicated nature. A picture of Marquez continually pushing away her closest friends that journeyed with her from the start of a marvelous career in the seminal film Stand and Deliver, to her descent into chronic illness -- is painted here. Her friends are depicted both in their earliest stages of grief and disbelief, as well as in various stages of regret for steps that might have been taken to stop the tragedy. But the steady pursuit of justice for Vanessa continues. By virtue of the California Public Records Act, filmmaker Cyndy Fujikawa secured access to the raw police body-worn camera footage which tells a different story than what was released publicly. In a groundswell of police shootings and calls for change, Ninety Minutes Later puts a microscope over one incident, weaving together news footage, clips of Marquez' film and television career, interviews with aspiring "Vanessa's" and the police body-worn camera footage from several angles.
Orange County 2nd District Supervisor, Vicente Sarmiento, will be participating on the panel on behalf of his late sister, Vicki Sarmiento, who is featured in the documentary.
The event will be held in the Education Building (EDUC), which is building 3 on the attached map.
