The UCI Law International Justice Clinic and Center on Globalization, Law and Society (GLAS) host a conversation with David Kaye, Sima Samar, Richard Bennett and Karima Bennoune on developing tools for human rights and advocacy.

About the Speakers

David Kaye is the former United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Promotion and Protection of the Right to Freedom of Opinion and Expression. He is the Author of Speech Police: The Global Struggle to Govern the Internet. He is currently a clinical professor of law at UCI Law and he will be facilitating the discussion.

Sima Samar is a human rights advocate, activist and social worker. She served as minister of women's affairs of Afghanistan and was the Chairperson of the Afghan Independent Human Rights Commission. In 2012, she was awarded the Right Livelihood for "her longstanding and courageous dedication to human rights." Dr. Samar is currently a visiting scholar at Tufts University.

Richard Bennett is the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Afghanistan. Mr. Bennett has served in Afghanistan on several occasions in different capacities including as the Chief of the Human Rights Service with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (USAMA).

Karima Bennoune served as the United Nations Special Rapporteur in the field of cultural rights from 2015 to 2021. She is the author of Your Fatwa Does Not Apply Here: Untold Stories from the Fight Against Muslim Fundamentalism. Bennoune is currently a professor at University of Michigan Law School where she specializes in public international law.
