Hello everyone,
Thank you to those who joined us for our virtual job and internship strategies workshop, and a big thank you to Allison Keller for a very informative presentation! For those of you who were unable to make it, here are some of the main takeaways:
Preparing for Internships:
As you start to search for internships, reflect on what you want out of your experience: Is it a skill? Hands-on experience? Or something you just want the opportunity to try? You'll also want to consider the types of internships you're looking for, the companies or positions you're interested in, and the location of the job. When preparing for internships consider gathering the following:
- Resume/Cover Letters - The Division of Career Pathways can help you tailor your resume/CV to fit the position you’re applying for.
- List of References vs. Letters of Recommendation - Most positions won’t need letters but may require anywhere from 3-5 references.
- Interview preparation:
- The Division of Career Pathways offers in-person drop-ins by the Career Patio (11:00am-2:00pm Monday-Friday).
- Handshake
Where to Find Opportunities:
- Handshake is a great website that lists any job opportunities DCP learns about.
- Regularly check company websites as they may also post opportunities.
- On-Campus Career Fairs is another option, although it doesn’t encompass all opportunities.
- Job Boards for more specific things such as government jobs or NGOs: Idealis
- Research Companies - Use sites like LinkedIn, Vault.com, and Glassdoor to find someone who is in the position you want and look at the path they took to get there.
Networking: “It does make a difference, it does matter”
Networking is essential not only for internships but for overall professional development. It helps you learn more about your chosen profession, how to get into the profession, and find potential mentors. Start making connections by:
- Attending events
- Joining professional associations
- Holding informational interviews: Ask someone who's in your field of interest to talk about what they do and how they got to where they are. Informational interviews are a good way to get advice and recommendations.
- Communicating your interests with friends, family, classmates, co-workers, professors, and alumni; The best places to do this are LinkedIn or the Anteater Network
Don’t forget to follow up and keep in touch after networking with people. Make sure to keep connected and send a message of gratitude afterward where appropriate.
General Tips & Advice:
- Research your employer
- Tailor your resume/cover letter to the job description. Your employer will notice!
- Start early with a direction in mind, there’s no right or wrong time as long as you feel prepared.
- Be persistent and proactive, don’t be afraid to follow up when appropriate.
- Check out this website for more related resources!
