Hello Everyone!
Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to our Graduate Student Event tonight! In case you were unable to make it, here are some of the things that were shared by graduate student Lily Cheng:
Undergraduate:
Lily attended an undergraduate program in China, where she began her research career as a Professor Assistant in a neuroeconomics lab. During her time in this lab, she cultivated her interest in studying the human mind and decided to apply to graduate schools in her final year.
Graduate:
Lily's graduate school career began at Dartmouth College. One project she took on there was being a psychology popular science writer, where she translated psychology findings from the US into Chinese and used them to analyze current events at the time, like decision making in gambling in the FIFA World Cup.
After her first year at Dartmouth, Lily left the program and spent the next year recovering and reflecting back in China, which helped her narrow down her research interest to spatial orientation in humans, and led her to apply for another program at the University of California Santa Barbara. The program has since then transferred to the University of California of Irvine, where Lily continues to study human navigation and is a member of the Adult Outreach Committee in UCI's Center for the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory (CNLM) as well as the Cognitive Science Colloquium committee.
Takeaways:
- Explore as early as possible - There will always be steps you'll need to take in order to reach your goal, so the earlier you find your goals, the more time you'll have to plan out and execute those steps in between.
- Talk to people and reach out as much as possible - It’s much more probable to land an interview if you send many resumes versus just one.
- Confidence comes from courage!
A big thank you to Lily Cheng for coming out to share about her amazing journey through undergraduate and graduate school! We hope you all enjoyed learning about her graduate school experience. |
