Hello everyone!
Thank you to everyone who made it out to our Research Involvement Event this week! In case you were unable to attend or missed some of the information, here are some of the important topics that were discussed during this week's meeting:
Identifying Your Research Interests:
When identifying your research interests, some things to think about are:
- What subject(s) interest you the most? What classes or professors did you find the most interesting and why? Once you have this identified, you can do more research on these topics by looking at the professor's CV or publications.
- Attend seminars, presentations, or talks that might expose you to subjects of interest.
- What kind of experience are you looking to get out of a lab? Things to consider include the type of lab (wet lab, working in the field, computers, etc.), the size of the team you'd like to work with, and the amount of commitment you'd like to put in.
- Network with those in your field of interest
- Attend professors' office hours
- Talk to your academic advisor
Applying to Labs:
One process you might go through while applying to labs is to start by browsing the lab's website, reading some of the lab's publications, and then emailing the lab's principle investigator (PI). UCI has a lot of different resources to help you during this process:
- An email template created by UROP for reaching out to professors (do not just copy and paste!)
- Centers to help you when writing your email:
A big thank you to our CSA advisors Dr. Richards and Dr. Styvers for coming out to share a bit about themselves, as well as our amazing guest speakers, Tommie, Sara, Kavya, and Patricia for sharing about their experiences in the respective labs and their advice for those in attendance. If you have any further questions, you can reach them through the CSA Discord. |
