Hello Everyone! Thank you so much to those who were able to attend our Week 1 meeting on career paths! In case you were unable to make it, here’s what you missed:
Which Major?
Trying to figure out if you’re in the right major? Take the time to observe these general comparisons between the Cognitive Science and Psychology majors:
- Psychological Sciences B.A.: Focuses on topics like social, emotional, and cognitive development. Learns psychological aspects of societal issues, and trains in research methods and statistics.
- Psychology B.A.: Focuses on topics like developmental psychology, clinical psychology, perception, learning, memory, cognitive processes, and neuroscience.
- Psychology B.S.: Focuses on topics like developmental psychology, clinical psychology, perception, learning, memory, cognitive processes, and neuroscience. Incorporates more physical and biological sciences into the study of mind and brain.
- Cognitive Science B.S.: Focuses on topics like cognitive neuroscience, experimental psychology, sensation, perception, attention, and memory, language, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. Takes a more quantitative approach to research and theory.
Majoring in Cognitive Science can prepare you well for Graduate Programs in AI, biostatistics, cognitive psychology, computer science, education, engineering, information technology, linguistics, neurobiology, neuroscience, and public health.
Majoring in Psychology can prepare you well for graduate programs in clinical psychology, developmental psychology, psychology, cognitive psychology, neuropsychology, behavioral systems neuroscience, social-personality, and clinical science.
But note that these are not the only paths that you can pursue going into grad school!
Careers in Cognitive Science/Psychology
- A degree in Cognitive Sciences can prepare you for many different career paths, including but not limited to AI Design and Research, Human Factors Engineering, Speech Synthesis, and Voice Recognition, as well as a career working with social media.
- A degree in psychology can prepare you for jobs involving clinical work or research, but some career paths may require higher education
- It's important to note that there are many similarities between a degree in Cognitive Sciences and Psychology, and both can lead you to the same career path depending on what it is you want to do
- Some resources to help jumpstart your career are UCI Handshake, Anteater Network, and UCI Career Pathways
Don't Know How to Get Started?
Some general advice is to start by getting involved with the community. The good news is, you’ve already started if you’re reading this right now. Other ways to get involved include reaching out to professors to discuss your interests or joining labs to become involved in research.
- The CSA also provides an opportunity for you to become even more involved by joining one of our committees. We don’t require any previous experience or a resume, so if you’re looking to get started early, apply here
Three keys to success:
- Leadership experience
- Pursuing academic curiosity
- Demonstrating your ability to self-motivate
In general, having experiences that demonstrate skills in leadership, communication, project management, and teamwork will prepare you for just about any job application. |

UP NEXT: Research Involvement Event
Get ready for our first big event of the year! Come join us NEXT THURSDAY (Oct. 7) AT 7:00pm for our research involvement event (Location TBD)! The research involvement event aims to inform attendees about the process of identifying their research interests and provide exposure to the application process as well as what it's like to participate in research. Dr. Srinivasan and Dr. Lee will be present to give a welcome speech to attendees, and we will have some amazing student research assistants who will be sharing a little bit about their experiences. You'll also have the opportunity to chat with these guest speakers individually to learn more about their specific areas of research. RSVP today!
CSA Committees
Looking for ways to get more involved in the CSA? Our committee applications are still open! The CSA has different committees, each with different responsibilities that allow the CSA to connect and grow. For more information on each individual committee OR to apply to a committee, check out our CSA committee forms under "Surveys & Forms" in campusgroups (also linked below).
