Over the past 19 years, Ye has travelled all over China, meeting with local musicians and recording both well-known and lesser-known or endangered traditional music. The music landscape is vast and diverse; music from different regions also have rich long histories and distinctive local characteristics. He created a system to decode Chinese music from physical, ethnic, geographical and instrumental perspectives, a project that so far has collected 1,056 pieces of music played on more than 200 kinds of musical instruments. He is committed to working on the project for the next ten years.

Ye Yunchuan will introduce his project and present video clips of a number of different musical instruments, some of which might be very obscure to the UCI community. A Q&A will follow the presentation.
