UCI CAMINOS Lab Workshop Film Screening Event and Discussion of Tlatelolco Revisited (2008)(Excerpt), De aquí, De allá (2019), and Pop Refuge (2019) 

Joel Valentín-Martínez will present a workshop film screening event and lecture that centers on some of his past and current artistic dance projects through the Latinx experience. The lecture will include a short live performance from one of his latest works in progress. 

From 1990-2003, Joel Valentín-Martínez performed as a principal dancer with Garth Fagan Dance throughout the United States, Canada, the Middle East, Europe, Australia, South America, and the Caribbean. His recent commissions include Last Dance (2023) for Mexico City’s VII Festival Internacional de Danza Cuerpo al Descubierto, Dear Brother (2023) with Toronto’s KasheDance Companies; otros dias de guardar (2022) and De aquí, De allá (2019) with Mexico City’s Barro Rojo Arte Escénico, and #passagebreak2 (2019) for Compañía Puertorriqueña de Danza Contemporánea. Both Tlatelolco Revisited (2008) and Misplaced Flowers (2011) were commissioned by Chicago’s Luna Negra Dance Theatre. He has choreographed the stage production of The House on Mango Street at the Stepping Wolf Theatre (2009) and has collaborated with California based visual artist John Jota Leaños for Imperial Silence: Una Opera Muerta (2008-2017).
