Sally Field plays a single mother who tries to unionize the North Carolina textile factory where she works. Inspired by a union leader who visits her workplace Norma Rae is awakened to militancy, much to the consternation of her fiance and her employer. Based on the true story of Crystal Lee, the film debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in 1979 and earned Sally Field an Oscar for Best Actress.
