Paul Schrader's directorial debut, this film is set in Detroit and environs and focuses on the lives of blue collar and ex-con workers trying to survive in a fast changing world. Richard Pryor gives a performance of a lifetime playing one of a group of workers who are caught between a corrupt union and a punishing employer. They plan a robbery that leads them to discover depths of corruption they could not imagine.
