STARRING SITAR MAESTRO USTAD SHAHID PARVEZ AND FLUTE VIRTUOSO SHASHANK SUBRAMANYAM WITH PT. ABHIJIT BANERJEE
SAT SEP 28, 2024 AT 8PM
Join us for a once-in-a-lifetime concert as two of India’s greatest musicians, Ustad Shahid Parvez and Shashank Subramanyam, join forces for an evening that blends Hindustani and Carnatic classical music.
Shahid Parvez Khan is widely recognized as one of the greatest sitar players in the world. His unique tone, astute artistic sense, and powerful sound have become his hallmark as a respected performer and composer. He has achieved success in not only preserving tradition, but also pushing the sitar’s boundaries to even greater heights of aesthetic beauty. Khan represents the seventh generation of the sitar’s first family, the Etawah Gharana. A very young Shahid Parvez was initiated into the rich traditions of the Gharana by his father and guru, Ustad Aziz Khan - the famous musician and son of legendary sitar and surbahar virtuoso Ustad Waheed Khan. His family has produced the most revered and influential figures in Hindustani classical music including Ustad Sahabdad Khan, Ustad Imdad Khan, Ustad Enayet Khan, and Ustad Vilayat Khan.
Shashank Subramanyam is an accomplished flutist from India, renowned for his expertise in Carnatic classical music and training in Hindustani classical music. His exceptional talent allows him to skillfully blend patterns of improvisation from both music systems, making use of a diverse range of flutes that cover octaves not typically supported by the traditional Carnatic flute. Audiences recognize Subramanyam for his captivating performances characterized by intricate improvisations, melodious compositions, and pulsating rhythmic variations. Having displayed exceptional musical talent from a young age, Shashank began performing at the age of 6 in 1984 and has continued to showcase his artistry for over four decades.
Pt. Abhijit Banerjee is a tabla master with a career spanning more than three decades. He is recognized for his exceptional skills and versatility with a broad range of Indian classical music. His innate sense of rhythm, creativity, and impeccable technique have established him as valued collaborator with some of the world’s most renowned musicians in both Indian and Western music.
The program will also include Parupalli S. Phalgun, a renowned percussionist, mastering Mridangam, Khanjira, and Konnakol. Trained from age five, he’s performed globally with top artists like Dr. L. Subramaniam and U. Shrinivas. An A-Top grade All India Radio artist, Phalgun also teaches at the Government Music College, Vijayawada.
